Project Hope tests health

Programme coordinator, Tsholopelo Mathebula with volunteers Nthabiseng Baloyi and Sipho Maseko and community health worker, Genevieve Phihlela help test people for diabetes.

Project Hope SA, based in Zandspruit, provides people in the area as well as surrounding areas with free diabetes tests and hypertension screenings.

On 17 May the team from Project Hope paid a visit to the Wildfig Business Park in Honeydew to give free screenings as well as check the overall health status of people. Programme coordinator, Tsholopelo Mathebula said that they commonly find diabetes in the areas they do screenings at, because of poor diets and little to no exercise.

According to Project Hope, diabetes means that blood sugar or glucose levels are too high. Too much glucose in the blood is not good for your health. The pancreas controls the amount of glucose in the blood as it makes insulin, which helps get glucose from food into your cells. Then in turn the cells turn glucose into energy. However, in diabetic patients the pancreas stops making insulin.

Diabetes warning signs:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Increased appetite
  • Increased urination
  • Visible weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Recurrent skin infections
  • Slow healing

Project Hope was busy the entire day with people from the business park having themselves tested to see if they are healthy.
