A post circulating on Facebook claims that staff of Game at Cradlestone Mall bludgeoned a cat to death with hockey sticks.

The post reads, “Please boycott the Game at Cradlestone Mall. The staff yesterday bludgeoned a cat to death with hockey sticks. Shame on you Game staff.”

Other concerned individuals shared the posts, with one having over one hundred other comments on the post, all of which voiced disgust and shock.

The woman who wrote the original post said it was not her but her principal at work who witnessed the incident and she took to social media to expose it as she was appalled. Roodepoort Northsider was unable to contact the witness at the time of going to press.

Cradlestone Mall management released a statement on its Facebook page on 5 May which read,

“To all shoppers: Please take note that Cradlestone Mall Centre Management is aware of the cat incident accusations that were made, We immediately contacted Game and are awaiting their factual written statement. This is a very serious accusation and all facts need to be gathered and supported. Kind regards.”

The incident is said to have occurred on 3 May.

Management then released a statement from Mass Discounters, trading as Game.

“Last night we became aware via social media of an allegation that a stray cat had been killed by a member of staff in one of our stores. We immediately launched an investigation and contacted the NSPCA to make them aware of the allegations. We are appalled by the actions of the staff member concerned and we have issued an immediate notice of suspension pursuant to conducting a disciplinary hearing. We will also implement disciplinary action against two additional staff members who were involved in the incident. This behaviour is not in any way representative of the standard of conduct that we expect from Game employees and we apologise unreservedly to all those people who are understandably offended by this incident,” the statement said.
