The King’s School West Rand hosted its first choral verse festival, which is the first to be held on the West Rand.

Youngsters in grades R to 7 – as separate teams – were required to recite a poem or dramatic piece for the judges, who marked them on memorisation, diction, movement, communication, interpretation and performance.

Organiser and teacher at The King’s School’s Mercia Swanepoel explained that choral verse builds confidence, leadership skills and crosses language boundaries as some classes were asked to recite poems that were not in their mother tongue.

Principal of the school Ken Langley welcomed everyone to the festival and encouraged the audience to support those on stage as they had all put in the effort and would do exceptionally well.

Around 20 choral verses were performed as The King’s School was joined by other schools, such as His School Dayspring Children’s Village. “The children enjoyed it and for the one or two who do not like to perform as an individual, this was an opportunity for them to shine on stage,” said Swanepoel.

Any school that would have liked to have a platform for their children to perform choral verse was able to enter. The choral verse festival will be an annual event.
