Spokesperson for the Honeydew Police Station, Captain Balan Muthan has welcomed the arrest of two suspects who were initially apprehended by a security company for allegedly dealing in dagga on 13 June.

The two suspects were nabbed by SRT Security officers at the Pikitup Garden Site in Panorama AH close to Hendrik Potgieter Road, and police assisted in the arrest and confiscation of the 30 small bags of dagga found in their possession.

“What they [SRT officers] did is acceptable. Security companies can perform the necessary means to apprehend a suspect if found committing a crime in their areas of patrol,” said Muthan, adding that police should be called to the scene to arrest the suspect.

The security company’s operations manager, Maggie Bezuidenhout told Roodepoort Northsider that drugs and dagga are regular problems on the West Rand and they conduct regular searches, especially in areas where suspicious activities occur.

“Drug dealing, especially at dawn, is fairly common. However, [our officers have] arrested suspects before for drug possession,” said Bezuidenhout.

She added that the company also faces a lot of changes due to constant violent crimes in the area and said, “We operate in a high crime area where violent crime is not stabilising.”

Muthan has previously warned about dagga possession, especially among youngsters, following a successful Honeydew Drug Unit operation, which resulted in the arrest of five suspects in the first week of June.
