Local ice-hockey player, 13-year-old Daniel Brown, was proud to represent Gauteng in the Ice-hockey Inter-provincial Tournament 2017 during the July holidays.

Daniel was selected to represent Gauteng in the Leopards U/14 team, making it the third time in a row he has been selected to represent Gauteng. He was also the captain of his team for all three of their games, for which they were awarded bronze medals.

He had a great time, scoring nine goals and assisting with four others, a performance which earned him the trophy for being the ‘Best Forward’ at the tournament in the U/14 age group.

“I feel honoured that I was selected for the team and that I was considered the Best U/14 Forward of the tournament,” he said.

The tournament was hosted by the Western Province at the Grand West Casino Ice Arena in Cape Town from 2 to 9 July. Teams from the Western and Eastern Province, plus two teams from Gauteng, took part in the tournament.

Daniel said he has been playing ice-hockey since he was in Grade 2. He started skating when he was four years old and has always loved being on the ice.

He saw a poster for an ice rink’s ice-hockey team and he asked his parents if he could join. “The first practice was tough and I fell and hit my lip on my stick. My mother would not let me continue without full hockey gear. I felt proud and in a way ‘cool’ at that age in my new kit and have enjoyed playing ever since,” Daniel said.
