“I would like to congratulate the Lions for securing their place in the Super Rugby final this Saturday,” said Mayor Herman Mashaba.

In a press release on Monday, 31 July, he said that the Lions rugby team had secured a hard-fought win during the semifinal game. “During the semifinal, the Lions achieved one of the most remarkable comebacks in Vodacom Super Rugby history, when they came back from being 19 points behind, to beat the defending champions, the Hurricanes by 44–29,” he said.

He added that the win was a sweet victory for the team, as their history against the Hurricanes wasn’t pretty. “The Lions have lost their previous eight matches against the Hurricanes, including last season’s Super Rugby final in New Zealand,” said Mashaba.

The residents of the City of Johannesburg have many reasons to be proud of the Lions rugby team – not only are they playing an exciting brand of rugby, but they are also an integral part of the fabric that is Johannesburg.

“As a result of their win on Saturday, they secured their second consecutive Super Rugby final. I urge the city’s residents to come out in numbers to support them in their quest to lift the trophy this Saturday, 5 August,” he concluded.
