A big cash reward has been offered to the public in hunt for the five suspects reportedly linked to two recent attempted armed robberies at Browns Jewellers in Cradlestone and Clearwater Malls.

The reward has been divided into R50 000 for each suspected arrested and successfully convicted.

This information made rounds after photos of the syndicate were circulated from a website called SA most wanted mall criminals which was constructed and launched by Browns Jewellers.

Albert Maree from Browns Jewellers, whose main objective is to fight crime, said the company started the website to offer a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects, and would thereafter share the information with the police.

The incidents happened a week apart. The syndicate’s first attempt was in Clearwater Mall on 16 July, followed by the most brazen attempt in Cradlestone Mall, where a guard was hit with a steel object during the planned robbery which resulted in shots being fired.

The issue of safety at malls has raised serious questions as shoppers remain nervous. However, the Gauteng provincial spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo, declared that police will intensify visibility at the affected malls. He said there will be more police presence, especially at Cradlestone Mall, and police are going to be working hand-in-hand with security personnel to maintain a high level of security in the malls.
