Shopping malls have proven not to be the places of retail relief they were previously thought to be, since two local malls were hit by robbers in the space of two weeks.

The first robbery occurred on 16 July, when eight men allegedly attempted to ransack the Browns Jewellers shop at Clearwater Mall. However, a panic button was activated which set off the smoke detectors on the floor. The second incident happened on 30 July, where seven suspects allegedly fired several shots while they attempted to rob the Cradlestone Mall branch of Browns Jewellers.

As these incidents are still under investigation and no arrests have been made, Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan gave shoppers the following tips on what to do in the event of a mall robbery:

  • Do not resist the robbers
  • Stay calm
  • Be observant. Make mental notes of their appearance, clothing, language and any distinctive facial marks
  • Make a note of the vehicle the criminals use in the robbery
