The Maragon High School Dramatic Arts Department exhibited its many talents at its annual Drama Showcase.

The evenings of 16 to 18 August saw a line-up that aimed to showcase the variety of performances and talents of the Grade 10 to 12 Dramatic Arts learners.

This year’s programme was packed full of fun, with performances in the styles of comedy, movement theatre, musical theatre and even some original post-modern performances, that transported audiences beyond their everyday realities.

The High School Drama Studio was transformed into a magical place where the audience were transported to various interesting places to meet equally interesting people and hear their stories, in places such as a therapist’s office, a Chinese restaurant, a taxi rank, and even the sets of the hit musicals, Mamma Mia, Evita and Hairspray.

The production was the result of many months of work by the Grade 11 Dramatic Arts students who were tasked with producing the entire event. They are divided into various departments (human resources, front of house, finance, marketing and publishing, technical, and stage management) all of which form part of running a theatre as a business.

The Grade 11s learned the importance of departmental and production meetings, and the value of communication and good planning. It has become tradition to announce the hosts of next year’s Showcase at the end of the performance. Congratulations to Grade 10 learners Israel Chilhoane and Nkhensani Mashisane, who are the hosts for Showcase 2018. “It was a great honour to end this year’s showcase, but an even greater honour to be chosen as hosts for 2018,” said Israel.

The Drama Showcase has become an annual highlight as it entertains hundreds of learners and parents each year.
