Various stakeholders from the City of Joburg (CoJ) rallied together on 5 October to host an Open Day at Weltevreden Park Clinic to promote healthy living and showcase the City’s health services.

Representatives of various CoJ departments, including specialists from the Health Department, Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD), the billing department and Ward 126 councillor David Brand were introduced to a horde of people who came to the clinic for medical assistance.

According to the health promoter at the clinic, Charles Dibedi, the purpose of this event was to create awareness about health-related issues, and to make people conscious of and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Dibedi added that during the event members of the public were tested and examined for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, HIV/ AIDS, cervical and breast cancer, prostate cancer, TB, and high cholesterol. Optometrists and a hearing specialist were also assisting.

Head nurses at the facility were given an opportunity to discuss the different types of services they render to the public.

Councillor Brand and Linda Hlatshwayo from the Region C Citizen Relationship and Urban Management Department, interacted with the patients and discussed service-delivery issues.

JMPD’s community outreach officer, Ouma Morudi urged the residents to obey the City’s by-laws they apply to on the streets. “The problem here is by-laws. There are demarcated areas to sell your items. Pavements are for people to walk on,” she said.

She added that in order for residents to ply their trade on the streets, “There are certain procedures to be followed”.

She encouraged residents to contact the JMPD office on 011 758 9100 for information about the legal requirements for street vending.
