Two Security guards contracted to Shoprite U Save in Cosmo City landed themselves in hot water after a video of them assaulting and wrongfully arresting a woman at the store went viral over the weekend.

The incident, which took place on Saturday, 7 October, caused a storm on social media and the caught the attention of police and the Gauteng Community Safety Office, which visited the store on Sunday, 8 October, calling the arrests of guards.

Brigadier Anesh Maharaj observes an interview with the victim at the Cosmo City Satelite Police Station after the incident.

It is reported that the woman was being punished after her 3-year- daughter messed herself outside the store.

In the video the guards are seen trying to cuff the woman while her daughter cries in the midst.

MEC for Gauteng Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, during a media briefing, said she hopes her intervention serves a deterrent to any other security guard or security company or shop that wishes to abuse its customers. She made it clear that her mandate is to reduce crime against women and children.

“My concern is we’ve come a long way in educating people about the crime that is committed against children and women, but it seems to some people this has fallen on deaf ears,” she criticised.

Malobane further criticized the store for employing untrained security guards. Malobane exposed the guards of their qualification status after his office conducted a background check on them. “The kind of guards appointed by this company don’t qualify to be security guards which means the company just took anybody without checking if these people are qualified,” she said.

Malobane also explained that the department of labour has a duty to send out inspectors from time to time to conduct qualification checks.

Malobane said an arrest has been done and were waiting to arrest the other guards involved. Captain Balan Muthan from Honeydew Police Station said, “According to the management of the security company they said the security guards have been placed on suspension.”
