Builders Warehouse management has distanced itself from the recent tension between informal labourers and police.

Law enforcement, including police and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department were caught up in a storm when they tried to evict the workmen who have been advertising for jobs at the entrance to the Builders property in Strubens Valley on 21 November. The clashes resulted in the arrest of four men and injury to a police officer whose face was struck with a brick during the tussle.

At the scene, Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, told Northsider that the company had laid a charge of trespassing against the workmen who were asked numerous times to vacate the private property.

This was however denied by Builders. Asanda Nkomo, the company’s public relation practitioner said, “Builders management did not lay a charge of trespassing.”

Nkomo made it clear that this was a routine public safety initiative by police. Nkomo indicated that the workmen had a right to advertise for jobs as long as it was done in a safe and responsible manner. “We believe all have the right to advertise their skills pursuant to seeking work opportunities.

It is important that in busy areas frequented by the public such as this one that this is done in a safe and responsible manner,” Nkomo concluded.
