A sewer blockage is currently causing distress in the Little Falls neighbourhood between Hendrik Potgieter and Falls Roads.

The discomforting stench, which can be smelled from as far as four properties away from the source, has resulted in nearby residents fearing for their health.

Ian Woolley, a Little Falls resident, who complained about the problem causing an unbearably putrid odour to waft through his property, said the sewer has been blocked for weeks, allowing raw waste to gush visibly into the ground.

“The sewer has been blocked for almost six to seven weeks, and it seems no one is worried about it,” said Woolley, who has logged the matter with Johannesburg Water, but has not seen any action from the entity.

Woolley shared his concerns if this matter is not treated with the urgency it deserves. “It is the main sewer line that is blocked. The blockage has occurred in a property further down the road. Now my worry is that the sewerage will start building up and pushing back, and this will be a health hazard going forward,” he explained.

He added that the foul smell prevents them from opening their patio door as the smell comes directly to his property. The property where the blockage is reported has indicated that Johannesburg Water came out to assess the problem.

Questions have been sent Johannesburg Water for comment. Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, indicated that she was aware of the problem.
