Sunny Smiles Assisted Learning Centre reflected on the hive of activities and learning that the school participated in this year.

The school is a small centre situated in Radiokop that caters for children with specific special needs such behaviour, emotional, language, remedial, low spectrum autism and low spectrum Down Syndrome.

Diane O’Carroll, the school principal (middle) celebrating a successful year with her precious and funky-looking learners.

It is a place where children can learn at their own pace and to the best of their ability with individual assistance, according to Diane O’Carroll, the school principal.

Driven by their motto – ‘I can do it!’ – Diane said her biggest aim is to help children to feel confident and have good self-esteem.

Apart from embarking on successful events this year such as crafting handmade hearts for the elderly in a retirement village and collecting canned food for the Knysna fire victims, the school also hosted a concert and prize-giving event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment.

“I believe each child has done well at something this year so each child received an award,” said Diane.

A happy smile from Bongi Dube.

Learning self-control in Grade 2, most improved numeracy for Grade 1, most improved English as a second language for Grade R, most beautiful singing voice for Grade 00, most improved vocabulary for a little boy who didn’t talk for Grade 000 and the Sunshine award for the most consistent worker in Grade 1 were just some of the awards presented to the hardworking learners.
