More sewerage problems for Roodepoort residents

Wynand Gericke pointing out where the main problems lie.

Wynand Gericke, a Ruimsig resident for nearly 20 years, contacted the Northsider after numerous attempts to contact Joburg Water, with little to no response.

He is concerned about sewage that allegedly has been leaking into a stream running from Wilgespruit, Ruimsig and all the way to Muldersdrift for almost a year.

The area where soil has simply been dumped to cover the manhole leak. According to Gericke, this could wash away with the next big rains.

The stream that is allegedly being contaminated, joins another stream, which then flows past his house. During heavy rains, the sewerage becomes a problem on his property.

Last year in January Gericke first reported the issue to Joburg Water via email.

“In the rainy season this line overflows from time to time and spills into the Wilgespruit stream,” said Gericke in his first correspondence to Joburg Water.

He also felt that if the sewerage situation was to escalate, it could become a serious health hazard.

“This will kill all life in and around the stream; not to mention the risk to the health of all people living near the stream.”

His final attempt at contacting the City’s water entity was last November.

“To date nothing has been done about this problem. Every rainy season it gets worse,” Gericke insisted.

Upon visiting Gericke’s home, he also informed the Northsider that as far as his knowledge goes, an otter has died as well.
