Bantwana set to host women’s football tournament

Bantwana College was founded in 2017, in the hope of increasing participation by women in the world of football.

Bantwana is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) that started out in the second division of the Easterns Local Football Association’s summer league.

They have since migrated to Allen Glen High School where they practise on Wednesday nights from 6pm onward.

The first official Fifa Women’s World Cup was played in 1991, but South Africa only acquired a national team in 1993, when Banyana Banyana was formed.

Ever since, the sport has gained popularity, but South Africa is still without a national women’s league.

In hopes of further advocating the sport of women’s football, Bantwana is hosting a pre-season girls’ and women’s tournament on Saturday and Sunday, 17 and 18 March. The tournament will kick off at 8.30am on 17 March, with teams competing in two sections – an U/19 girls’ section and a senior (19+) women’s section – each made up of six teams.

The costs surrounding the tournament are R1 200 per team, each consisting of a squad of 16 players.

For further details about the tournament, please contact the college by sending and email to [email protected], or calling 076 620 6808.
