The burst pipe on Eastwood Avenue which caused a huge trench on 8 March, might take a couple of days to be repaired.

Ward 126 councillor, David Brand explained what is needed to be done to get repairs underway. “Johannesburg Water needs to get into the hole, pump out the water and drain the pipe to access and assess the damage,” he said.

A car dived nose-first into the trench on 8 March; however, no injuries were reported. The road had to be temporarily closed to divert traffic.

Brand indicated that JRA barricaded the trench. It remains unclear whether the entire road is still closed off.

Brand said the repairs cannot be initiated until JRA receives an order from Johannesburg Water. “What people don’t understand is that all roads fall under JRA. JRA won’t be able to fix the problem until Johannesburg Water pays for the damages,” he explained.

Pipe bursts are not something new on this road – Brand recalled that the area faced the same challenge in the past when fibre installers accidentally damaged the pipe, causing more damage than at present.
