Business break-ins, robberies and hijackings among biggest crimes in Honeydew

Problematic crimes and solutions to the scourges were discussed during a Honeydew Sector 3 Community Policing Forum meeting held on 11 April in Wilgeheuwel.

The sector manager, Captain Karen Jacobs from Honeydew Police Station, tabled some of the major crimes that remain problematic in the sector.

Although she was quite pleased with the decrease in criminal activities, she stressed that business break-ins, hijackings on Peter Road and personal robberies were still matters for extreme concern. “We need to look at business break-ins, which are still a problem in Lazer Park. These break-ins happen during weekends, when the businesses are closed,” she said.

Jacobs added that a business forum meeting will be held to discuss this scourge further.

Last month, Sector 3 chairperson, Carolyn Lanzillotti, warned about the hijacking of Range Rovers. Jacobs said the issue persists as yet another Ranger Rover had been hijacked. She said VW Polos are also often targeted. Lanzillotti has encouraged residents to park their cars inside their premises.

Another problem raised by Jacobs was personal robberies, which also occur on Peter Road. “We’ve experienced a spate of personal robberies, with most of the victims being Monash University students. The criminals are generally stealing their tablets and cellphones,” she explained.

Jacobs also informed the residents about the events set to take place at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium, which will see an influx of vehicles; however, she indicated that she has requested the event organisers to beef up their security.
