The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development, councillor Leah Knott, will be able to focus solely on her crucial municipal portfolio in future, as she has received a helping hand from a stand-in councillor for her ward.

Ralf Bittkau, a Democratic Alliance Proportional Representative (PR), has come out of his retirement to assume ward duties in Ward 97, in a bid to assist Knott with her overwhelming workload.

In an interview with the Northsider, Bittkau vowed to improve where Knott had left off. “I was next on the list and came in as a PR councillor. I was recalled from retirement to come and assist Knott, because she is an MMC and is overwhelmed with a lot of work,” he said.

He told Northsider that he finds it exceptional that both councillor and PR councillor come from the same party, but said it’s a good situation.

Bittkau shared his vision for the ward. “I’m hoping to build this ward and the branch into a strong community. Leah has done a fantastic job so far, but she has really taken strain,” he said, as he commended Knott for her efforts.

He also appealed for patience from the community as he tries to grasp some of the issues affecting the community.

“I’ve got to get used to the ward, my previous ward was smaller, covering Olivedale and Boskruin, and was totally different to this one,” he said.

He also discussed some progress on issues that were raised by the community. “We’ve got the grass-cutting and pothole issues. We also have the sewerage spillage issue at the Ruimsig Golf Course which we are resolving,” Bittkau explained.

He mentioned that he has returned to infrastructure after a 10-year gap, saying he would have the advantage of being able to build close contact with the city’s infrastructure departments, as he plans to sort out issues pertaining to power and water in particular.
