The event, held to raise funds for the Ark Animal Centre in Chartwell, was held on Wednesday, 9 May and gave students some much-needed relief between classes.

Students at Monash University in Ruimsig were pleasantly surprised when they walked out of class last Wednesday to the sight of a stall with puppies and cupcakes.

“We thought it would be a good idea to help Ark Animal Centre as well as provide the students with a bit of stress relief as we are entering exam season soon,” said one of the students involved in the organising of the event, Tayla Livesey.

Stacey Lacey, a clinic nurse at Ark Animal, was so happy to see that the students had organised the event properly as sometimes the puppies can be harmed if not treated carefully.

“It was extremely well organised, which makes our jobs easier as caretakers of puppies because we know the students have it all under wraps,” she said.

They sold cupcakes and other goodies which entitled the students to a cuddle with a pup. Those who didn’t want to buy anything, could simply pay for a photo with a puppy.

A number of students came back for more and more time with the puppies, with one even saying, “This is the best thing that has happened since I got here.”

The funds that were raised on the day, plus the dog food that was collected for the centre, amounted to a donation of more than R6 400.
