F46 Rand Water contractors apologise for power outage

Maziya General Services, the contractors appointed to the F46 Rand Water Project, have apologised for the power outage crisis which affected residents and businesses in Weltevreden Park and Allen’s Nek between 30 and 31 May.

City Power reported on the power outage, stating that the cause was the installation of water pipes in the area. The cables between Jim Fouché Road and Bergkaree Avenue intersecting JG Strydom Road were damaged by the contractors.

“We are aware that this has caused considerable inconvenience to everybody especially as winter has set in. The direct cause of this outage was a section of the storm water drain situated in the deep trench on the affected streets that became loose due to ground vibrations from operations in the immediate vicinity and fell on the M.V cables below, damaging them,” said Jan von der Heyde, the project’s community liaison officer.

He also commented on the issue of ageing infrastructure and the compliance procedure which has to be followed whenever a similar crisis occurs.

“The basic infrastructure in this suburb is about 50 years old. The operations team from City Power embarked on preventative maintenance on these cables once they were repaired, again due to the aged infrastructure. We would also like to bring to the attention of the residents that when faults on any (M.V) system have been repaired under fault conditions, the process governing the energising of the infrastructure has to be done according to an established procedure that involves pressure testing, energising and then phasing.

Once this has been concluded and signed off, the area energising commences,” Jan explained further. He concluded by saying, “Maziya General Services wholeheartedly apologises for this outage and wishes to remind residents that although we are geared toward service delivery, these anomalies will occur, even though we take every possible precautionary measure to avoid or eliminate them.”
