The Volkswagen Polo might reign supreme at the top of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers (NAAMSA)’s May 2018 vehicle sales statistics, but how much does it cost to fill up its tank?

With the most recent fuel price hike of 82c/l for petrol, and 85 to 87c/l for diesel, many South Africans are left wondering by how much their pockets are going to be emptied when they fill up their tanks.

The motor industry across the country is huge and there are thousands of different vehicles and vehicle models, so we couldn’t possibly calculate the cost to fill up each vehicle in South Africa and its subsequent models.

Instead we’ll be making use of the 10 most-purchased passenger cars in South Africa in May this year.

NAAMSA released May’s vehicle sales statistics on 1 June, indicating that there were 42 984 new vehicles sold in May, an increase of 2,4 per cent from May 2017.

Of the 42 984 sales, an estimated 37 370 units (87 per cent) represented dealer sales, an estimated 7,3 per cent represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3,7 per cent to industry corporate fleets and 2 per cent to government.

The new passenger car sales in May also represented growth from the previous year, with 26 561 sales compared to May 2017’s 26 382.

The medium and heavy commercial vehicles industries saw the largest growth, growing by 17,6 per cent and 21,1 per cent respectively, compared to May last year.

The most-purchased passenger cars will of course have a Top 10 – South Africa’s most popular cars at the moment.

With these Top 10 passenger cars and the newly-hiked fuel price, we have calculated just how much it used to cost fill up their tanks, and just how much it will cost them now after the price increase.

In the list and corresponding graphics below, the petrol price indicated is that of unleaded 95 octane petrol.

We have also opted to use the most recent entry-level models of the vehicles as examples, so be aware that fuel consumption may vary between the various years and models of the vehicle.

1. Volkswagen Polo – 1 979 vehicles sold

2. Volkswagen Polo Vivo – 1 904 vehicles sold

3. Toyota Corolla/ Auris/ Corolla Quest – 1 228 vehicles sold
