Eight year-old Lisa Coetzer, who has been playing golf for as long as she can remember, was taking part in only her second international tournament when she teed off at Longniddry Golf Club in Scotland between 29 and 31 May.

Taking part in the eight-and-under age group, Lisa was the only South African out of 48 golfers in her age group.

She got the three-day tournament off to a decent start when she carded a 46 in her first round on a course she’d never seen in person before arriving in Scotland.

According to her father, Chris Coetzer, Lisa struggled on the first day in part due to the infamous pot-style bunkers in Scotland.

Lisa bounced back the next day however, as she ended her second round with a personal best of 37, improving on her previous best of 38 by one shot.

“The fact that she was able to put together a personal best round on a foreign course is amazing, I’m seriously proud of her,” Chris said.

Lisa would carry her good form over to the final round as she carded a round of 41 to finish in a highly respectable 8th place, out of 48 golfers in her age group.

Chris highlighted just how amazing the tournament, which had golfers from 50 countries around the world taking part, and the experience were for young Lisa.

“All the girls were extremely competitive on the course, but once they walked off, they were like the best of friends, which is absolutely amazing to see,” Chris mentioned.

Chris was also quick to mention that the weather, which is usually cold and miserable in Scotland, was actually pleasant for the tournament.

“The weather was amazing – sure, there was the odd patch of mist and cold rain, but overall, it generally held up.”
