Claims of sewage spill behind hospital denied

A water pipe that burst behind Netcare Pinehaven hospital caused quite a stir during the weekend, as residents believed that the water seeping through the soil was sewage.

Residents of the area reported flooding of the sidewalk on Sunday, 10 June.

The water seeped through the soil from the burst pipe below ground.

Many reported it was sewage water, and for fear of a health risk or contamination of the hospital, widespread concern was raised.

However, Marietha van Vuuren, Netcare Pinehaven Hospital manager, released a statement soon after the leak was reported.

The water flowed in streams down the sidewalk.

“The leaking pipe was noticed on Sunday morning and our technical team went out to inspect it. It was established that it was a municipal pipe carrying [clean] water, and our team alerted the municipality to the leak,” said Van Vuuren.

“We are most grateful for the municipality’s prompt response, and can confirm that a team arrived to fix the leak on Sunday afternoon.”

She confirmed that there was no health risk whatsoever.

The water which flooded the sidewalk has since receded.
