Repairs to the collapsed portion of Peter Road on the corner of Walnut Road are expected to begin later this week.

This was communicated by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) on 10 July, a couple of days after the road collapsed into a sinkhole, posing a great danger to motorists.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, the JRA spokesperson, said that the road was identified as unsafe for travel – consequently, they had to barricade it closed. “… following an inspection by JRA engineers, [the road] has been identified as unsafe for travel. The JRA has installed barricades along the road and erected signage closing off the road for the safety of road users,” she said.

“JRA is aware of the inconvenience for road users and consequently emergency repairs are scheduled to begin later this week. Exact time-frames for completion will be communicated shortly,” she added.

The MMC for Economic Development and Ward 97 councillor, Leah Knott, said that repairs are expected to be completed before the end of this month, but she would have more accurate time-frames after the JRA has met with the contractor.

Dirt roads (Walnut and Cypress Roads) are currently being used as alternative routes; however, this interim measure has upset residents who have complained about the dust generated by the detouring vehicles.

In response, Bertha said, “A water tanker will be brought in to deal with the dust along Walnut and Cypress Roads as an interim measure. JRA apologises for the temporary inconvenience and wishes to reassure road users that the urgent reinstatement of the road is a top priority”.

When asked about who is to blame for the situation, Bertha said the JRA is currently engaging with its legal team on a way forward, which includes by-law enforcement.
