More shacks were destroyed in Zandspruit when fierce flames gutted through the residents’ dwellings on Wednesday, 11 July.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi estimated about 14 shacks to have been destroyed during the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

He said the cause of the fire was unknown as yet; however, at the scene, residents suspected a cigarette butt to have been thrown into one of the shacks.

This catastrophic event came just a week after 10 shacks had been gutted by a fire that was caused by an unattended gas stove.

On a previous occasion Zandspruit Ward 114 councillor, Victor Mafinya vowed to start block meetings in his community to educate the informal settlement residents about preventing fires.

Muluadzi also indicated that they as EMS are lending a helping hand to try and curb shack fires in Zandspruit. “We’ve distributed about 100 Jozi Safety Kits in the area; over and above that we installed 100 smoke detectors as an early warning system to alert residents in case of fire incidents at home. Also, 100 households in the Mbhele section benefited from this initiative,” he explained.

He added, “In the last two years, compared to the previous years, we have had a huge reduction in the number of fire incidents in the area.

We want to encourage all our residents to continue to look after all heating devices like paraffin stoves, candles, heaters and Imbaula while in use and not to leave them unattended. This will help prevent fire incidents at home.”
