A change is as good as a holiday
Traveling is a good way to avoid burnout, whether you’re traveling a short distance to your favourite coffee shop or further afield. Take your laptop and work from somewhere else. With the internet and cloud tools like Dropbox and Skype, there’s very little that can’t be done from most places. The change of scenery will spark your creativity and re-energize you.
Schedule regular you-time to do something you enjoy and stick to it. If you’re feeling guilty about it you’re on the right track. Taking time for yourself will recharge your batteries and help you to get more work done.
Know when to stop
Most high flyers find it difficult to unplug which makes them prime candidates for burnout. It’s important to know when to switch off. Set boundaries like not working after a certain time or not working when you should be spending time with your family or loved ones.
Follow your passion
If you don’t love what you’re doing you shouldn’t be doing it. If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing burnout is inevitable. Maybe it’s time to start pursuing that dream that you keep hidden and suppressed in the back of your mind. Or to turn your hobby into a business. The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, said the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu.
Take a power nap
Taking a power nap for even twenty minutes will refresh your brain and leave you feeling right as rain.
Get some exercise
Exercise gets all your juices flowing and destresses your body and brain. Unplug and just go for a brisk walk wherever it’s safe or convenient if that’s all you can manage, or rebound on a mini trampoline.
Mindfulness is the new buzz word
Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing without being overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. It involves acceptance and paying attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them.
Find a Hobby
A good way to avoid burnout is to find a hobby that you can immerse yourself in for a few hours a week. It’s a very therapeutic way of spending free time.
Plan a holiday to get away from it all
Spending quality time with your loved ones is of paramount importance. Plan a holiday where you can unplug and truly get away from it all. Make sure that you unplug from all business related devices.
Focusing on your breath for even ten minutes is a powerful way of re-energizing and centering yourself when you are frazzled.
Get a cat
Cats lower stress and anxiety levels. Petting cats has a calming effect on people. One study found that cat owners were less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than non-cat owners. This may be because cat owners are more relaxed and have lower stress levels.
