While the launch of the festive season’s high visibility campaign was under way in different parts of Roodepoort on 8 November, Honeydew Police conducted a separate operation in Sector 3 in conjunction with local security companies.
The operation targeted the tent dwellers on Plot 323 who had been linked to various criminal elements in the surrounding suburb. “The target was the contentious tented camp on Hoëveld Road in Honeydew. Intelligence was gathered relating to some of the occupants of the tented camp who have been responsible for the spike in crime in the local area, including plots and units in the retirement villages bordering the camp,” said Gary Jordaan from BCI Security, which assisted in the raid alongside their K9 unit.
According to the report, two men were arrested and several suspected stolen items and housebreaking implements were confiscated.
“Several suspected stolen items were found in the lower part of the camp along with housebreaking implements. Narcotics, alcohol and other illegal items were confiscated, leading to the arrest of two suspects from the camp,” Jordaan explained.
He added that the operation was the first of many planned ahead of the festive season that traditionally sees a spike in crime in the run-up to Christmas.
All role-players were thanked for their involvement.
