Most running clubs were represented on 18 August when runners took on the annual Clearwater 10km and 5km Fun Run Road Race. Almost 3000 runners participated in this leg race which started and ended at Clearwater Mall.
The Sweet Science for the Ghetto Greatness boxing tournament took place on 28 July at the Kagiso Memorial and Recreational Centre in Kagiso. The tournament was staged by Team Dida Boxing Promotion in association with Vision View Production. At least six fights were staged on the evening of which some left spectators astonished after unexpected losses and victories.
Planning a wedding, baby shower, parties and kitchen teas; everything enthusiasts needed to know was at their disposal during the Garden venue open evening on 28 June. The Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden in partnership with To The T Events hosted the evening with exhibitors such as Kelly Jayne’s Cake Boutique, Cream Cheese Professional Djs, Design Expression, Tammy Holliday Photography and Raikona Catering taking part. The exhibitors showcased their services to a fair number of couples and families members that graced the beautifully decorated Strelitzia Hall on the evening.
Emthonjeni Community Centre in Zandspruit was a hive of activities when an organisation fond of Zandspruit partnered with a local church and business to host a spectacular sports event on 23 June. The event was hosted by Impophomo, an organisation that aims to empower children in informal settlements through sports development, in partnership with North point City Church and Umsizi, a company specialising in the design and implementation of socio-economic development programmes focused on rural communities. The event hosted a 5-aside soccer tournament for the boys and netball games for the girls. The local clubs battled it out in different division in pursuit for the ultimate prizes which were handed over by the former Bafana bafana and Kaizer Chiefs player Siboniso Gaxa, Impophomo director John-Mark Kilian and Zandspruit Sports Forum founder Nhlanhla George Nkosi.
Animal supporters and general weekend visitors had a splendid time on Sunday, 10 June, at Rusty Hook in Honeydew, at the Jugomaro Predator Park fundraising event. The event ran from the morning until late, with drinks, food and loads of entertainment to keep the attendees in a party mood. The purpose of the event, according to Justin Fernandes, the owner of the park, was to raise funds for security at his facility after his wild cats were poisoned in May.
Roodepoort Rugby Club managed to win four of its five games against Randfontein last weekend to snatch back the Castle Bowl after it spent two years in Teine’s hands.
Team Dida Boxing Promotion in association with Vision View Production hosted yet another spectacle boxing tournament dubbed Brawl in the Hood which featured seven enthralling bouts at the Kagiso Memorial and Recreation Centre on 7 April. Four of Team Dida’s fighters Frank and Fernando Rodrigues, Prince Dlomo and Thato Bonokoane impressed their coach Dida Dipheko by winning their fights.
The Danie Van Zyl Recreational Centre in Newlands attracted all age groups on Sunday, 25 February when the African Punishment Wrestling Association (APWA) hosted its ladder match event which left wrestling fans asking for more.
