About Roodepoort Northsider

In January 2011 — seven years after the first edition of the eagerly-awaited Northside Chronicle hit the streets — a new updated version of the paper was introduced in the northern areas of Roodepoort. The new weekly to now keep a lookout for is the Roodepoort Northsider. But why the change? The award-winning Northside Chronicle was launched in 2004 in tandem with the long-established Roodepoort Record. From the impetuous beginning, residents and advertisers alike embraced the newspaper as the voice of the independent community living in the northern areas of Roodepoort — or Northside — as it quickly became known by all. However, Northside — a name we appropriately coined — has no relevance to a specific geographical area to people not familiar with Joburg West, hence the name change to Roodepoort Northsider. Northside is arguably the fastest-growing region in terms of residential, business and industrial development. And it has still not seen the end in demand for property in this attractive part of Gauteng. In fact, it's experiencing a boom with first-time home buyers, affluent and settled residents (including pensioners) and entrepreneurs (seeking both residential and business stands), queuing to get pieces of a desirable lifestyle in beautiful surroundings. These elements are being addressed in the Roodepoort Northsider through carefully selected editorial material catering for each of these. It's a case of mixing and matching, giving the newspaper a flavour not often seen in local weeklies. It was soon found that the oft-tried recipe of filling spaces – with anything other than relevant issues – was unacceptable, so all hard news stories are about relevant issues directly affecting the people of Northside. The team is headed by Ingrid Pepler as group editor, Aimee McGill as the editor, Nicholas Zaal as sport editor and Duschanka Hitzeroth as the online editor.

Since its inception, vital issues, such as poor roads, constant electricity outages and lack of adequate water pressure (which have not kept pace with substantial development), were constantly addressed in the publication. Response to our coverage from residents as well as relevant authorities has been phenomenal. Plans for improving road structures, for instance, have been brought forward (some up to five years earlier) as a direct result of reader and editorial pressure.

In its first year, Northside Chronicle was named Free Newspaper of the Year (with pagination less than 24) at the annual Caxton Excellence Awards, establishing itself as a brand to be reckoned with. Other awards include runner-up in the category Best Front Pages at the annual Sanlam Community Press Awards in 2005, and a highly commended award at the Caxton Awards in 2006 in the category Free Newspaper of the Year (pagination 24 and more). The publication has also produced award-winning journalists over the years.

Even on the financial side, the publication's success has been phenomenal. This can be attributed to the fact that its editorial content is of a high standard, the layout clean and modern, and extra care is taken with its distribution.
With its team of professionals, the new-look Roodepoort Northsider vows to keep readers informed of the exploits, successes, foibles and failures of the people who've made Northside their habitat.

The first edition of the Northside Chronicle was distributed on Thursday, 15 January 2004, and the first edition of the all-new Roodepoort Northsider was distributed on Thursday, 13 January 2011.
